Abstract
For those of us who identify under the LGBT umbrella, travel offers opportunities that may not necessarily be so important for heterosexual folk. Some of us are unable to lead the kind of life we would like: free of assumptions, expectations and obligations based on restrictive understandings of sexuality and gender; free of hostility and violence; free of state-sanctioned persecution. Travel to LGBT ‘homelands’ such as San Francisco, Berlin, New York, Amsterdam, Sydney, or to resort destinations like Provincetown, Palm Springs, Ibiza or Puerto Vallarta, offers a respite – a chance to lead a life more authentically our own. Although such travel offers a temporary escape, it also offers the possibility of creation: building identity, forging new friendships, creating new opportunities for community connection, sexual exploration and romantic experience.
