Abstract
Based on non-competitive ideals, lifestyle sports have grown exponentially in the last decade, frequently at the expense of traditional sports. This growth has led to a demand for suitably skilled coaches to facilitate the development of these lifestyle performers. However, the inherent assumptions of a coaching culture based on competitive sporting values may not be well received by performers from sports without competitive antecedents, who may even reject competition and be attracted to lifestyle sports' unique set of values. In this chapter, the challenges faced by coaches and coach developers in navigating the multifactorial elements of lifestyle sports coaching are critically considered. An overview and description of some concepts and practices that may provide a framework for coaching practice and coach development are provided to promote discussion, further research, and development.
