Abstract
There is a complex relationship between events and climate change. Events contribute to climate change through carbon emissions from a range of activities, particularly related to travel and transport. However, events also offer an excellent opportunity to showcase best practice in terms of mitigation of carbon emissions as well as adaptation to climate change. Using the conceptual framework proposed by Smit and Wandel (2000), this chapter consider four key questions - (1) adapt to what? (ii) who or what adapts? (iii) how does adaptation occur? and (iv) how good is adaptation?. The chapter then presents a research agenda for responding to and addressing these questions. Key areas for future research are proposed as encouraging more and better risk management for event organisers; investigations into the efficacy of existing carbon mitigation efforts undertaken by event organisers; and research into behaviour change and leadership in the events industry in order to encourage a paradigm shift in how event organisers understand and plan for the future of their industry. From a practical perspective, the chapter highlights the lack of a regulatory framework for the events industry which is required to enhance the uptake of mitigation and adaptation measures.
