Abstract
Emerging pollutants (EPs) are chemicals that have a significant influence on terrestrial, aquatic, and human health due to their highly toxic nature. Soil and water contamination is an alarming threat globally because of EPs. Nevertheless, only a few of these compounds have been toxicologically evaluated due to their vast numbers. This chapter comprehensively discusses the contamination of the aquatic environment by EPs and their induced risks. This chapter also elucidates the sources, fate, and implications of developing compounds of concern in the environment. Furthermore, the effect of EPs discharged directly into rivers from wastewater treatment plants on the aquatic ecosystem is explained. A better understanding of the current challenges posed by the presence of EPs in the aquatic environment is presented, offering critical suggestions, research gaps, and recommendations.
