Abstract

Education systems today aim to educate young people so that they can flourish in an increasingly unpredictable world. Since the COVID-19 pandemic education systems have also been challenged to operate in a time of heightened uncertainty when many of the past assumptions about the future have become obsolete. A hard question among policymakers and education leaders in the Asia-Pacific region is how to build more resilient education systems so that they would be able to manage the uncertain future. In this chapter we suggest that equity should be an education policy imperative in the Asia-Pacific and beyond so that all students, not just some, would benefit from education in a time of uncertainty. We also suggest a broader definition of equity and some negative consequences of growing inequalities in education, with a particular focus on lessons learned from two internationally benchmarked education systems from the opposite sides of the Pacific, Australia, and Canada. Based on these lessons we suggest some education policy directions that could be considered in the Asia-Pacific countries.
