Abstract
Departing radically in academic writing (DRAW) can be a very playful exercise. Associate Professor Jasmine Brooke Ulmer writes about her work as “playful practice”. The origins and evolution of palimpsests lie in the ancient and medieval reuse of parchment. The word translates from Latin palimpsestus and Greek palimpsestos as “parchment from which earlier writing has been removed to clear it for new writing”. As DRAWers, they might like to think of our writing as palimpsestuous, that is, “texts in a relationship … with other texts”. In palimpsests, there are aspects of imitation, modification and substitution, as well as direct and indirect transformation of components of original text. As DRAWers, the authors might like to think of our writing as palimpsestuous, that is, “texts in a relationship with other texts”. The cherished memories of books provide a source of inspiration for his DRAW work.
