Abstract
This chapter critically examines the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras (SGLMG) in Australia and its dual role as a community-based celebration and a commercialised tourism event. It explores the historical significance of the parade for LGBTQ+ communities and the complexities arising from its integration in the tourism economy. The chapter discusses the tensions between maintaining the event's original political and social reform goals and the pressures of commercial interests. It highlights the challenges of ensuring that the Mardi Gras remains a platform for advocacy while also contributing to economic growth.
