Abstract
This chapter takes stock of the main elements of the case chapters in this book, starting with the challenge to translate academic research on networks to practitioners and calling for a dialogue between both. Other main elements of modern networks are the variety and diversity in network composition, evolution, construction, context, and culture, which require more configurational thinking and next-generation network management. Another element, enhanced by recent crises that impact existing but also evoke new networks, is the increased focus on meta-governance. The chapter also points to three main challenges regarding network performance: goal attainment, network learning, and sustainability of network relations connecting back to how people matter and social processes develop. Five characteristics that retain future relevance for social networks are identified and reflected upon: the importance of micro-relational foundations, modern networks as learning systems, the increased dynamics of networks, the trend towards more complexity, and finally, the need for enhanced management and leadership strategies and capacities to deal with the former characteristics. The chapter concludes with some ‘power points’ to inspire practitioners.
