This writing is broken; it is born of a broken heart searching for radical words of repair and returned in another form. This writing breaks open onto the page as fragments, splinters and shards of memories that speak to moments when the heart of the world was uncovered but for a moment, fluttering between joy and pain. The heartbeat of this writing breathes into the brokenness with vulnerability as an “invitation to the bitter and a commitment to the sweet”. This writing bends down and picks up the broken heart pieces and tries to put them back together into a shape that moves with, and yet beyond, hurt—into hope. Huddled on the edges of the academy doing vulnerable writing, the author have often felt like Virginia Woolf's fisherman's daughter, particularly when it comes to matters of brains, bodies, and broken hearts all mixed up together in writing.
