Abstract
In this introductory chapter, we review the four main frames for understanding adventure: (1) adventure as a type of activity, (2) adventure as framed through the environment, (3) adventure as within the person, and (4) adventure as a dynamic relationship. We provide a structure for the reader and show how each frame has bearing on the concept of Adventure Psychology. We also propose a fifth frame which incorporates the others and looks at adventure as an experiential state. We then look ahead at the content of the chapters in this book, presented in two sections: Section “Sustaining Performance” (while maintaining wellbeing) and Section 2 “Transformational Impact of Adventure”. Finally, we suggest how Adventure Psychology can be viewed beyond the world of academia.
