Abstract
This chapter provides an overview of the present condition of health and nutrition among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It introduces the concept of strengths-based versus deficient-based approaches and alignment with Aboriginal ways of knowing, being, and doing. This chapter discusses traditional diets and health, dietary changes with displacement, colonisation and forced control, and the impact of living in remote versus urban settings on food and nutrition. It describes diseases related to over and undernutrition, then discusses issues of food security and food sovereignty. Additionally, it presents strategies for health professionals to support food sovereignty, nutrition, and health in collaboration with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
