Abstract
In our era of planetary crisis, it is critical that social work respond to the needs of the people and environments that have faced—and increasingly face—severe disruption. This necessitates a rigorous, transformative approach to environmental social work education. This chapter outlines our vision for such an approach. We begin by defining envi-ronmental social work education and noting relevant disciplinary literature. We then discuss our vision of transformative environmental social work education, which integrates multiple theoretical frameworks; offers opportunities for practice; is vision-focused; is explicitly justice-oriented; and centers self-care and community care as foundational values. The goal of this discussion is to offer readers a starting point upon which to design a transformative environmental social work course.
