Abstract
Background
The public health and economic implications of perinatal mental health problems (PMHP) are well documented. Maternity clinicians are ideally placed to effectively identify women at risk and facilitate early intervention. However, in China as globally a number of issues are implicated in a failure to recognise and treat. It is imperative to assess the current state of clinicians’ knowledge regarding PMHPs in China.
Aim
The present research project sought to evaluate the psychometric properties and applicability of three perinatal measures in the Chinese maternity clinical context: (1) the Perinatal Mental Health Awareness (PMHA) scale, (2) the Professional Issues in Maternal Mental Health Scale (PIMMHS), and (3) the Perception of Perinatal Illness (PIPS) scale.
Methods
A cross-sectional design and instrument translation and evaluation approach was taken to investigate the psychometric properties of these three perinatal measures. A total of 598 obstetricians, obstetric nurses, and midwives participated in this study from 26 hospitals across China.
Findings
A mixed pattern of reliability and validity emerged for the three measures. Overall, the structure of the models held in the Chinese context, but problems emerged for validity.
Discussion
The validity concerns may reflect cultural beliefs around maternity care in China which require further exploration in future research.
Conclusion
Overall, the measures offer some utility in the Chinese context for evaluating knowledge and awareness of perinatal mental health problems. The measures are simple, easy to administer, and may provide insight into cross-cultural understanding of PMHPs. Whether the measures can be used cross-culturally is a matter for further research.
