Abstract
Introduction: Given the increasing numbers of universities in Queensland offering occupational therapy and the associated increase in clinical placements required, a large number of students have been completing clinical placements in non-metropolitan areas. In order to meet the clinical education and peer support needs of these rural and regionally placed students, the delivery of educational tutorials via videoconference technology has been trialled in some areas.
Objectives: The current study examined occupational therapy students’ experiences of the use of videoconferencing as an education and support tool whilst on their clinical placement within two rural Queensland Hospital and Health Services.
Method: Occupational therapy students who completed their clinical placement in Darling Downs and South West Hospital and Health Services during 2012 and participated in VC tutorials were invited to complete an evaluation survey to examine their experiences. Both qualitative and quantitative responses were captured in the survey.
Results: This presentation will report on the study findings analysed through a mixed method approach, using both descriptive statistics to report on quantitative findings and thematic analysis to examine qualitative responses. Student perceptions on the effectiveness of VC for education, their satisfaction with the usage of VC for this purpose and barriers and enablers identified for successful delivery of education through this technology will be overviewed.
Conclusion: Results of this study inform the delivery of clinical education and support to occupational therapy stu-dents undertaking placements in regional and rural areas, highlighting the utility of VC usage for this purpose.
