Abstract

Increased mortality and poorer post hospital discharge outcomes are observed when malnourished patients are compared to well-nourished patients. However, it is unknown whether mortality, discharge location and readmissions differ between those who develop malnutrition in hospital compared with those who are malnourished on admission. This retrospective matched case-control study compares mortality, discharge location and readmissions at 3, 12- and 36-months post-discharge of those with hospital acquired malnutrition (HAM) to those with malnutrition present on admission (MPOA).
