A definition of safety leadership has been provided, alongside accompanying safety leadership behaviours. An empirical model of safety leadership has also been established. Information was guided through an exploratory research methodology and rooted within a large tier Australian construction company. Results outlined the importance of behaviours that are focused on establishing engagement, vision and safety. Safety leadership was shown to differ from other leadership disciplines due to distinctions in legislative requirements and the importance of demonstrated capability. Suggestions made in in this research can guide safety leadership efforts in the attempt to increase safety and reduce injury.
